India stands not as a mere spectator but as a prominent player in the global solar revolution. India currently stands 4th globally in solar power capacity. In the last five years, the country’s solar installed capacity has experienced a monumental transformation, increasing from 21,651 MW to 70,096 MW in 2023. With ambitious targets and policies like the Production Linked Incentive (PLI), India is propelling itself to achieve 500 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030. The commitment is not just towards sustainable energy but towards securing a greener tomorrow for the entire planet.
"India is one of the most vulnerable countries in the world for climate change and that is why it has this big push on renewables to decarbonise the power sector, but also reduce air pollution.
" At the World Leaders’ Summit, PM Modi stated ‘One Sun, One Globe, One Grid’ can be vital to re-establishing the environmental balance. PM Modi called for developing a worldwide solar power system during a conference on “Accelerating Clean Technology Innovation and Deployment”. He added that solar power can help restore the natural balance that humanity disrupted during the industrial revolution.
In addition to this, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced visionary schemes towards promoting Solar Energy. PM SURYA GHAR: MUFT BIJLI YOJANA project, with an investment of over Rs. 75,000 crores aim to light up 1 crore households by providing up to 300 units of free electricity every month. "At the same time, the scheme will lead to more income, lesser power bills and employment generation for people," PM Modi said. Notably, the savings will also be generated by selling the surplus to the distribution companies charging electric vehicles, entrepreneurship opportunities for a large number of vendors for supply and installation, and employment opportunities for the youth with technical skills in manufacturing, installation and maintenance.
Rooftop Solar Programme for the residential sector and the Off-grid Solar PV Applications Programme for rural areas are also making solar energy accessible by providing subsidies. The support is not just financial; it's a strategic investment in a solar-powered future.
‘Pradhan Mantri Suryodaya Yojana’ a government initiative aiming to provide rooftop solar power systems to one crore households in India. The initiative targets the installation of rooftop solar panels in one crore households from the poor to the middle class, aiming to provide electricity from solar energy. Emphasizing its broader impact, the prime minister highlighted that the scheme not only intends to reduce the electricity bills of the poor and middle class but would also make India self-reliant in the energy sector.
